Dr Ourania Kolokotroni is a pediatrician with a PhD in Epidemiology, currently in transition from the University of Nicosia Medical School to the School of Health Sciences at Cyprus University of Technology (start date 01/09/2021).

Dr Kolokotroni has been the Research Coordinator of the Paediatric Respiratory Research Unit at the Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health for 7 years and worked within a team that laid foundations for epidemiological research in Cyprus. She was involved in the organization and conduction of large population studies, funded through competitive grant applications. She has worked on a number of studies that have investigated the association of obesity with the development of chronic diseases such as asthma which involved the assessment of dietary, anthropometric indices, metabolic markers and physical activity levels in children. In addition, her PhD study was on the prevalence of Hypovitaminosis D, its determinants and association with chronic illnesses such as asthma.

More recently Dr Kolokotroni participated in a applied research projects aiming to improve health services provided by local NGOs. In the BrEaST Start in Life project, she acted as the Researcher Liaison between the Cyprus Breastfeeding Organization and the research team of the Cyprus University of Technology and investigated breastfeeding rates and determinants of breastfeeding in Cyprus with the aim to customize breastfeeding services. She also participated in the Erasmus project “Baby Buddy Forward” which used the participatory action research approach to transfer a health digital app developed for parents in the UK and contextualize to the Cyprus setting. Within the context of her clinical work and research on health literacy, she has been involved in activities to deal with improved communication with parents and health professionals on vaccine hesitancy.
